ZOOMING THE MOON: Digital Collage Workshop

Digital Collage art is a form of storytelling using layers and symbolic elements to visually communicate a point of view. It’s one of my favorite vehicles of expression through exploration and play. If you have access to a computer, the internet, and a program like Photoshop, you can create your own digital collage art. I’ve had a few people ask me if I would consider teaching a digital collage workshop and I kept finding myself resistant to the idea. Not because I don’t want to, but more because I don’t feel in a position to teach as I don’t necessarily do things “the right way”, with full understanding there is no right way. I know it’s less about “doing it right”, and more about collaboration and sharing what I have learned in my own process - this is how we help each other learn and grow as artists and creatives, and expanse of personal expression is something I highly value.

Every month I make a digital collage for the Naming the Moon playbook- the year long program I co-facilitate with my creative partner Isabel Abbott. Early on in quarantine due to COVID-19, someone asked again if I would consider teaching and this time I decided to give some thought to what that might look like. While making May’s collage (featured in the above video), I came up with the idea to create an unstructured, stripped down, conversational, inclusive, process-based workshop around creating June’s collage in real time over Zoom - the unofficial sponsor of #stayathome.

So, here we go…. please join me on Tuesday, May 26th at 11:00 am PST where I will be creating June’s collage for our Naming the Moon playbook in real time - start to finish, while also taking your questions. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the live call, there will be a recording available within 24 hours after the live call. And no, you won’t be on video so feel free to come as you are with your favorite beverage and ready to type some questions for me in the chat box.

To be clear, this isn’t an online course. There will be no modules, assignments, homework, or prompts. I won’t be teaching as much as I will be talking in-depth about my own process, showing you some basic layering tips in Photoshop, and creating a collage in real-time. I will be sharing my screen like you see in the above video, but much more slowly. I will also talk about my own history with digital collage, where to source composite elements, and whatever else may come up organically during our live call. Hopefully you will come away with something useful you can bring into your own digital art. I will also be taking questions for those who have them, and if for any reason there are more questions than I can cover during the 90-minute live call, I will be sure to address them in a follow up email to those who have registered.

This will be a donation-based workshop with a suggested donation of $10 to help cover my costs only, though that is only a suggestion and it’s certainly not a requirement for access. You are invited to donate what you are able, and it is my privilege to make Zooming the Moon available to anyone who wants access, regardless of economic means. Donating is optional.

If you are able to donate, you can do so by clicking the image below

A bit about my background: I hold a BFA degree in Graphic Design where I also studied film and art history. I bring my tech skills from my years working as a composite and digital artist in the film industry to my work as an artist, designer, and photographer.

Below are some examples of my collage work.
